This season our U17 and U18 squads will train and operate under a single structure. ‘Transitioning from Youth to Senior Rugby is a big step.’, said Eugene Yost (SARFC General Manager) ‘Whatever their next destination, University, Saracens Senior Rugby etc., we want our players to have the best possible rugby experience and go forward with confidence’.
The new Colts group will include the U17 teams from the Youth section and the U18 squad from the Seniors. Colts Head Coach, Tony Copsey, explained ‘The setup is like most school sixth forms. We will practice, train and develop as one squad and play matches according to age group and ability’.
The squad plans to field three XV’s. An U18 team will play high quality friendlies against some of the best clubs in south England. The U17 Crusaders will play in Division 1 of the Herts Middlesex League (HML), and the U17B Infidels will play in the HML Division 4 and play friendlies with clubs in London and the home counties.
The set up offers flexibility for players to play at the right level for them. ‘Whatever your standard, we have a place for you’ stated Colin Smith, U18 Lead Coach ‘one thing we can guarantee it will be fun and you will be fitter!’. The squad will be well resourced with experienced RFU qualified coaches, along with support and guidance from the Club’s Senior section. Club Chairman, Dominic Smart, added, ‘As soon as the Colts group was suggested it was amazing how aligned those involved were. We all want the same thing, namely give the players the best possible opportunity to enjoy their rugby and develop, both as players and young men’. The Senior section will be on hand to help the squad, and its teams, develop.’
Fancy joining us? We have room for more players. Summer training (non-contact) is on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm starting July 2. Please see the Colts web page or Contact Jonty Woodward, Chris Sweetapple or Jimmy Desmond for details. If nothing else come and have a post exam run around. New, or returning players, especially welcome.
When pushed for more details, Tony Copsey revealed ‘I can’t say too much yet, as we are at the planning stage, but we hope to take the squad to Portugal next Spring to play in an International Tournament.’ Sounds exciting, and Tony promised to keep your correspondent updated.
